BEACH READS: KATE’S FAVORITE, FUN ORGANIZING BOOKS

It’s amazing how often I’ll be working with a client, decluttering some long-forgotten corner that had piled up, and we come across a book about organizing. The client looks at it wistfully, gives a little shake of the head, and says, “I thought that book was going to be the solution.”
I get it! Wouldn’t it be great if just reading a book could declutter your home? Organizing books give us great ideas and techniques, but they lack the hands-on motivation of having a Certified Professional Organizer by your side—guiding you step by step as you apply the lessons right there in your own space.
That said, organizing books can still provide wonderful inspiration. Whether they spur you on to tackle projects yourself or help you decide it’s time to hire a professional for some accountability and expertise, they’re motivating — even fun — reads. Many blend storytelling, humor, and practical wisdom that makes the process feel less daunting.
Add an organizing book (or two) to your beach reads list this summer! Here are my top suggestions. Each one tackles the subject in a unique way—some with tough love, others with gentle encouragement or a touch of humor. Perfect for reading with your toes in the sand or on a shady porch.

It’s All Too Much by Peter Walsh

OG organizer Peter Walsh brings the no-nonsense energy he showed on the show Clean Sweep (Remember that early-2000s TLC gem?) straight to the page. This book is a classic for a reason: it helps you confront the emotional side of clutter while giving clear, actionable steps to reclaim your space. If you need a motivational kick to finally deal with the stuff that’s weighing you down, this one delivers. It’s straightforward, empowering, and full of real-life examples that are highly relatable.

Hot Mess by Laurie Palau

Laurie’s approach is warm, witty, and refreshingly realistic. She gets that life can feel chaotic (Hello, busy families and never-ending to-do lists!), and she’ll help you with all three types of clutter: physical, emotional, and calendar. Her book blends organizing strategies with mindset shifts to help you move from overwhelmed to in control. It’s a great pick if you want something that feels conversational and encouraging rather than rigid. Expect practical tips wrapped in humor and empathy—perfect summer reading that leaves you motivated instead of scolded.

The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson

This charming little book takes a thoughtful, almost philosophical approach to decluttering. Margareta encourages us to thoughtfully curate our belongings—not just for our own sake, but as a loving act for those who might inherit them someday. It’s gentle, wise, and often humorous, with a cool Scandinavian sensibility that’s breezy and low-pressure. Ideal if you’re in the mood for something reflective that still gets you moving on sentimental items and excess stuff — and you want to read a story about skiing in a bikini!

Reading these books on the beach might just spark that “aha” moment or give you fresh ideas to try when you get home. And remember: organizing books work best when paired with action. Start small, use a method like my CALM approach (Clear, Assess, Locate, Maintain & Modify), and celebrate progress along the way.

If the inspiration leads you to want personalized guidance in your own home—whether for a full reset, seasonal refresh, or tackling a tricky area—I’m here to help make it happen without the overwhelm.

What’s on your summer reading list? Have you read any of these? I’d love to hear your thoughts (and any organizing book recommendations of your own!).
Happy reading and happy organizing!
