Great Reads

If getting organized were as easy as reading a book, then I wouldn't find organizing books in nearly every client's home! That said, here are some excellent books that can help give you insight into your organizing dilemma and motivation to help you change.

If you find it difficult to fit reading into your day or to get through nonfiction books, try listening to them as audiobooks.

  • ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life by Judith Kolberg and Kathleen Nadeau (This book has excellent organizing advice for anyone, not just for with ADD/ADHD.)
  • Digging Out: Helping Your Loved One Manage Clutter, Hoarding, and Compulsive Acquiring by Michael A. Tompkins and Tamara L. Hartl (Wonderful book to help bridge relationships between family members and understand each other's perspective about the hoarding behavior.)
  • The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter by Margareta Magnusson (A conversational, quick read that's not as morbid as it sounds)
  • Getting Things Done by David Allen (I recommend the abridged audiobook.)
  • Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized by Laurie Palau (This is a fun read that'll help you clear physical, emotional, and schedule clutter).
  • How to Do It Now...Because It's Not Going Away: An Expert Guide to Getting Stuff Done by Leslie Josel*
  • It's All Too Much: An Easy Plan for Living a Richer Life with Less Stuff by Peter Walsh (Favorite author, favorite book!)
  • Organizing from the Inside Out and Shed Your Stuff, Change Your Life by Julie Morgenstern
  • Unholy Mess: What the Bible Says About Clutter by Angie Hyche (Whether or not you're interested in the religious aspects of the book, Angie's sections on attention clutter and schedule clutter are awesome!)

For more organizing books, check out this excellent list compiled by my colleague Darla DeMorrow of HeartWork Organizing: Organizing Books by Pro Organizers.
