Why Buy When You Can Borrow?

3/4/2025

A professional organizer asks Why buy when you can borrow?

I had just come home with a bag full of new yarn, excited to start knitting the sweater my daughter had asked me to make for her. All I wanted to do was cast on and start knitting.

But — any knitters out there will know this — the skeins of yarn have to be wound into usable balls first. Otherwise, they’ll turn into tangled messes. I should have just paid the fee to have the store wind them for me! But, cheapskate that I am, I couldn’t do that after having spent oodles on the yarn itself.

If you’re not a knitter, let me enlighten you about the tedium of the winding process. For me, it entails sitting cross-legged with a loosely-bound hank of yarn stretched across my knees, going round and round, winding the strand into a neat ball, while trying to avoid hand cramps and yarn tangles. It probably takes 15-20 minutes per skein, meaning I was looking at a few hours of winding before I could even get to the fun knitting part!

Well, maybe I could just buy a winding machine. Down the rabbit hole of an online search I went. Of course, winding yarn involves not just one but two mechanisms: a yarn swift and a ball winder. The swift resembles a clothes drying rack and holds the yarn, while the winder — naturally — winds it.

I was looking at upwards of $50 just to be able to start my project. Nope. My inner tightwad had to find another way.

Lightbulb moment: Why not ask my online Buy Nothing group?!

Fix the Top Causes of Paper Piles

Take control of your paper piles with entry and exit strategies
Paperwork, filing, taxes -- there must be some people who enjoy dealing with these, right? I’m not one of them and I suspect you aren’t either. Unfortunately, with tax day coming up next month, piles of paper are a reality for many of us.
What are the top causes of this paper pileup?

  1. Indecision about what you need to keep.
  2. Inaction about disposing of the papers you don’t keep.

What are the solutions to these problems?

  1. An Entry Strategy = Rules for deciding what goes into your filing system.
  2. An Exit Strategy = A system for effectively getting rid of papers.

Have an old Kindle? Use it to help a student

Do you have an old Kindle e-reader (or two?) that you aren't using anymore?

A client of mine recently upgraded to the latest Kindle and wondered if there was a school that could use her older model. I did a little research and came across the Pageturner (formerly the Kindle Classroom Project). San Francisco teacher Mark Isero provides each of his high-school students with a Kindle to instill in them a love of reading and encourage them to become avid readers.

Even though Pageturner is based in California, it's pretty easy to ship Kindles because they fit well in a USPS small flat-rate Priority Mail box. Before shipping, just fill out the donation form on Mr. Isero's website and he'll get back to you with the address.

One small caveat: he doesn't take the very oldest model Kindles, so check the donation form to see if your model is listed.

Don't have a Kindle to donate but still want to support Pageturner? Donate money for books to be added to their Kindle library!

Bosch & Daughter Professional Organizing?

Picture
My 9-year-old daughter seems to be a chip off the old block – not only is she a crafter but she also likes organizing. “Yikes!” say my husband and 14-year-old daughter. Today’s post is a little encouragement from her to you.

The other day, she made this “Savers” truck and asked me to put it on my site. Of course, I couldn’t resist. She says it’s to remind you that Savers is “The best way to get rid of things.”

If you don’t have a Savers donation center and thrift store in your area, you probably have a Salvation Army, Goodwill, or other donation center nearby.

Why are these the best way to get rid of things?
1. They are conveniently located (pick one that’s close to home or on your usual route) so you’re more likely to follow through with your de-cluttering goals.
2. By donating to a thrift store, you’re benefitting your community by giving others the opportunity to buy at a low price your high quality, gently used items.
3. Most of these charities also offer pick-up services (hence, the truck) so you delete an errand from your To Do list and schedule them to come to your door and pick up your donations.

Be inspired: put a box or bag near your front door, fill it this week with things you no longer need, and bring it to Savers right away!

Fiber Recycling

9/12/2016

Wondering what to do with those tattered, torn, or stained t-shirts, pants, towels, sheets, etc. that aren't good enough to donate for resale?

Bring them to an H&M store and they'll recycle them for you. Plus you'll get a coupon good for a discount off your purchase. Your house gets decluttered, your stuff doesn't end up in a landfill, and you get a coupon to buy some fun new fashions! How cool is that?
