In a typical December, I like to help you out with a clutter-free gift guide. However, this is anything but a typical December. This year, everything seems a little more complicated, even gift giving. With restaurants, gyms, and other in-person experiences closing off and on, your go-to gift certificates might not seem right. Even clothes are a bit different with so many of us working from home more and wardrobes becoming much more casual. Let me help get your creative juices flowing as you check off your gift list! Restaurant gift cards are still welcome, especially when you’re supporting a local business. If you’re buying for someone far away, read reviews to find a good restaurant in their area and make sure to choose one that offers good takeout options. Many gyms and fitness centers are going virtual. This can be a fantastic gift for loved ones who like to stay fit but don’t want to workout outdoors in the winter. I love Studio47Pilates because they offer both live online classes and a large library of recorded classes, all of which will kick your butt -- in a good way! Online subscriptions to streaming services, premium channels, magazines, music and more make great gifts, especially for teens and millennials. A membership to Thrive Market is timely as many more people are having groceries delivered. If those on your list aren’t into the offerings at Thrive, go with a subscription for delivery from a more traditional grocery store. But what about stuff? Gift cards and subscriptions are great, but most of us still like to give and get something tangible. That’s perfectly OK! Just because it’s an object doesn’t mean it’s clutter. Anything you know will actually be used by the recipient can be considered clutter-free. One great way to give things you know they’ll use is to give things you love to use. Share your discoveries! What products have you found this year that made dealing with the pandemic more bearable? Maybe you happened upon the crunchiest potato chips, the world's softest socks, or the coziest sweatshirt dress (Made by American Giant, it proves that, yes, you can wear sweats on a Zoom call!). Put together “Our Year in a Basket” to share your new faves with your loved ones. For a few people on my list, I plan to make a “clean hands & home” gift by pairing this Raw Sugar sensitive skin hand wash (My 17-year-old daughter and I are obsessed with the lovely, light scent!) with a couple of adorable Swedish dishcloths. With all the hand washing and cleaning we’re doing these days, it’s nice to get an upgrade on products and tools. For kids, my favorite non-clutter gift is a Kindle e-reader. Kids like it because it’s a cool electronic device and parents like it because it’s a portable library that gets kids excited about reading. Just make sure you get a dedicated e-reader and not the Kindle Fire, which doesn’t offer the e-reader’s non-backlit screen (better for eyes) and is really just a tablet with internet access, games, and all the annoying screen-time things that parents battle to limit. Team it up with some hot chocolate packets and instructions on how to get Kindle books from the public library, and you’ve got a recipe for a cozy winter afternoon. I hope these ideas get your creative juices flowing. I’d love to hear from you!
